Remember my post on “Minority Report in Reality” ?, well looks like Jeff Han is now with Microsoft developing their Surface computing and interface system based on his patented technology.

Check out another video at Popular Mechanics on this technology as its now not rough circuit boards as we last seen, but in the form of a Coffee Table. Do check out how it interacts with other objects on its surface in addition to your fingers. Amazingly cool!

It’s totally awesome. I wish the future was here now and we had star trek-esque touch displays for all of our surfaces.

Hi Pietro,

True the idea is nothing new. But while before it was just computer graphics and simulated in movies and storybooks, NOW its actually a REAL interface. It has moved from virtual to reality, and thats why we are so excited about it!

It’s amazing! Unfotunatly - these computers will cost around 10.000USD so we won’t see these in our computer store and for now they will be only launched in the US.. I guess if you go shopping druring christmas in New York you might be lucky and see them already in the more sophisticated shopping malls…

Jasper, I know what you mean and agree with you. That product is supposed to be HERE now. But watching that site I still feel like I’m watching a sci-fi movie, not seeing reality. Right now only the military and casinos are buying them. (http://tinyurl.com/2nue2r) It’ll be a long time before we see the permeate the market in homes and restaurants like the Surface flash site suggests.

It’s interesting how Microsoft is always eager to make a big splash and announce that they are ushering in a new era of computing with their product, but then the reality of it is that it’s still a bit “untouchable” for the average user. (Forgive the pun, but it’s very appropriate here.) Zune and Vista were both preceded by big announcements and then followed by issues that kept them out of immediate reach to the average consumer.

But hey, you have to start somewhere. And any way you slice it, Surface looks awesome and Jeff Han’s work is brilliant. Now we just have to wait until the technology gets cheaper then we’ll see the price come down. I’m curious to see more renditions of Surface is smaller laptops and PCs.
