I stumbled over some very interesting work by Nina Katchadourian, a multi-media artist. The Sorted Book Project, started in 1993, takes place in may locations from public libraries to private book collections.

The process is the same in every case: culling through a collection of books, pulling particular titles, and eventually grouping the books into clusters so that the titles can be read in sequence, from top to bottom. The final results are shown either as photographs of the book clusters or as the actual stacks themselves, shown on the shelves of the library they were drawn from. Taken as a whole, the clusters from each sorting aim to examine that particular library’s focus, idiosyncrasies, and inconsistencies — a cross-section of that library’s holdings. At present, the Sorted Books project comprises more than 130 book clusters.

Check out the rest of her interesting work at her website.

What a nice source/idea for videogame textures.

Hmm that is an interesting concept, how would that work?

You’ve caught me off-guard. You’ve never skinned a polygon model?

Ah i see what u mean. Yep at one stage i was skinning every single day. I had thought it was some in depth second life library crowd sourced hack…you caught ME off guard! Your reputation precedes you!

Naw. I was thinking how I could have used these last year while working on the MTV gig. Put subtle messages together and stick them inside the virtual world. I remember thinking I could do something with the titles, but never got to making those textures (we sent a few models out to test another company and they did the bookshelves/magazine racks).

Actually thats interesting as well. Having textures as subliminal messages, you could create a place for advertising messages.

Yes. :)

There’s another space in which I expect to see advertising messages. It’ll be interesting to see how the developer deals with that when the game comes out, as there’s a component of it that I believe might make it especially difficult to remove once unleashed.

I brought that up with Ilya (MIT AdLab blog) early this year. I’ll take the idea offline as I’d hate to initiate a chain-reaction here for which I’d be held responsible. Assuming of course it could be done; I’m not 100% certain. But when the game comes out we’ll know soon enough… bc I’ll probably try it.

hey, I saw your comment at ilemoned’s blog. Maybe I can answer your questions. My site is on Mediatemple, too. I think MT is the best but expensive. The hosting plan I bought is GS. It costs $20/month. I’m in China, and I visit my site very fast. Any question you may visit my blog and post comment to me. Lol
