I think the 4 stages are good, but the 3rd stage (in my opinion) should last 2 years. My third year went by way too fast and then I was expected during the 4th year to perform at a professional level, and with professional originality. You are absolutely right on about interacting with industry professionals as early as possible. To observe, interact, and get advice from professionals would have been immensely helpful.
