It is about time someone designed one that has totally broken the traditional configuration of a Dump Truck! It is really impressive how this designer re-thought how one would operate, and then used that insight to designed a break-through product. Absolutely amazing concept, and sure sign of the amazing pedigree of Chinese designers to come.

In the same spirit as Visions of the Future Project, Philips generously shares with us their research findings of what our possible lifestyles could be in the era post 2020. Called Design Probes it is:

...a dedicated 'far-future' research initiative to track trends and developments that may ultimately evolve into mainstream issues that have a significant impact on business.

The Probes generate insights from research in five main areas; politics, economic, culture, environments and technology futures.

The end result are a range of "narratives", industrial design concepts and scenarios that are not predictions but instead are meant to stimulate discussion and debate. There are quite a number of projects on display, but the two most recent ones are:

Yesterday, at the height of the Singapore Fashion Festival, I was invited to view a wonderful fashion show that was unlike any other. Called Blueprint 2008 the show was a result of a cross-pollination of ideas between fashion and industrial designers. What I liked about it was that the work was part sharing and part collaboration of ideas between fashion and product designers, with both inspiring each other to greater heights.

I've always been a huge fan of strategy games of all types. Board games, tabletop miniature war games and of course, war gaming on the computer. Some of my favourites have been the Panzer/Fantasy/Pacific General Series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem Series and the great pocket favourite Advance Wars.

One thing I always loved about these computer strategy games was that its game mechanics are based around a very simple Rock/Paper/Scissors method of determining fighting abilities and combat resolution. However the key is when you have the added element of terrain influence. What you then get is a very simple concept that has a whole new depth of complexity.

Therefore it was an immense pleasure for me to discover WeeWar.

After months of work sorting submissions, we have officially launched the Dandelion On-line Exhibition featuring work of designers from Asia and beyond.

It was really great experience, and interestingly enough it felt more like a bunch of friends getting together to show our Industrial Design work. So before I forget, I like to thank all the people who submitted their work to the Exhibition!

Also I like to personally thank py for all her hard work in helping me get the exhibition up and running. It was a great process getting to the end, and we hope you enjoy the Exhibition as much as we did setting it up. Please do let me know what you think?

Now on a high lets get back to regular programming at Design Sojourn!

A while back I started this non-profit social-entrepreneurship endeavour called IDAsia.org as a means to network, uncover and perhaps showcase Industrial Designers from Asia.

As a result of these efforts, my team of volunteers (py, ec, kk and dotty) and I have managed to organise an online Industrial Design exhibition called Dandelion. This exhibition will be hosted by IDAsia.org and hopefully will be able to highlight some of the best and most interesting Industrial Designers from Asia.
