This is probably all over the place by now. But frankly, not only am I impressed with the final result, I am ecstatic over BMW sharing their design philosophy which I think has a lot more importance in this discussion and likely missed.

Successful design arouses desire. In order to achieve this, it is more crucial than ever before that car manufacturers create the conditions that allow customers to establish a close relationship with their cars. Therefore, designers seek ways to promote and intensify people’s identification with their car that reach beyond pure aesthetics. In the premium segment in particular, customers demand cars that stir emotions and allow them to express their individuality.

Check out the rest of the design philosophy here. It is long and wordy, but you do get the gist of it pretty quickly with the Blockquote above.

However if you are not feeling up to reading it, just watch the movie below!

Imagine when this car hits the highway, and it shape-shifts into a more aerodynamic car!

Just amazing!

Hi oneSaint,

Quite true! I wonder though if the fabric will start to flap at high speed? Hmm…

I read a comment somewhere, where this guy mentioned that they used to use this material on old airplane wings.

Not sure if its true… but interesting non the less. :)

Not only they made airplanes from fabric on wooden skeleton (WW1+2 have some fine samples) DIY airplanes are made today with fabric.
What’s new here is the concept of changing skeleton.

I saw this on Digg a while ago and ran into here. If you’re interested in the technical aspects of it, there’s also a good read on livescience about it here: http://www.livescience.com/technology/080617-bmw-fabric.html
