Wow! Great spanking new images of a fully functional $100 Laptop. I want one!

Since my last 2 posts, one which was a review on the $100 Laptop and the other on it’s operating system, I heard the OLPC project had some problems getting the product out, due to something like not able to meet the BOM cost and thus not meeting the $100 selling price.

But never say never, take a look at these great photos thanks to Robert Fadel, OLPC Director of Finance and Operations at his ultra-secret and extra ninja mode blog.

Great looking interface, and I’m glad they dropped the original yellow/orange for this fresher white/green color scheme. Also check out the antenna ears! Nice idea. Its a pity it is powered by the mains, I still like the original idea of a hand wound charged battery

Looks like a pretty tight housing and box built. Parts do not look mis-aligned nor with out of place gaps, good job to the manufacturer.

Ah how I wish I was part of this product’s design team! I take my hat off and applaude all the efforts taken by the people involved. I guess being in Singapore, we dont qualify for one as we are not third world anymore eh?

Wow…looks super high gloss on the finishing! Just the thought, India Education ministers was against the idea cos they rebutted that these new devices need more teachers!

So I’m not sure if pricing these laptop for US$100 works out for developing nations or 3rd world countries.

I heard of this project when it was still WIP. And I am thrilled that it’s finally materialised! My company develops software for school computer labs and you wouldn’t believe how many schools around the world that don’t even have computers. This is great news.

I think the idea behind this is fantastic, giving all kids a chance for a computer. However the main issue is that it would likly appeal to poorer kids IN developing countries.

The moment they dropped the hand wound charged battery, its appeal in 3rd world countries that have intemitten power supply had dropped.

But lets see how it goes as it is.

Yes I agree its a fine idea, I have seen its development,its fantastic. It comes with everything! Preloaded! Nonetheless, despite the doubts, its gd for a kids to appreciate and learn the basic computing needs in 3rd world countries. Hope the politicians can think through about that.

The last time I saw a prototype of this laptop, it still had that hand-crank thing and didn’t look so sleek. I think they are going in the right direction definitely.
Looking forward to more details about the OS and UI.
